When you get paid, are you relieved because you weren’t sure you would make it to the next paycheck? Do you ignore your bank statement or credit card statements because you’re afraid of what you might see? Does lunch out with a friend seem like a far-off luxury?
You don’t need creditors knocking on your door to benefit from credit counseling. Understand the warning signs to see if might benefit from a free counseling session.
Counseling sessions typically last about 60 minutes. Your counselor will ask you for information about your current credit card obligations, income and spending habits. Additionally, you may be asked for information required to process a credit report so that your counselor can determine whether your credit history contains errors that can damage your credit score.
Your session is completely confidential, and after reviewing your current situation, your counselor will work with you to set up a personalized action plan based on your financial goals. If necessary, your counselor can also guide you through starting a debt management program to help manage and pay off your credit card debt.
To get the most from your session, we recommend you detail your monthly expenses and gather your debt information (including copies of credit card statements, pay stubs, etc.) ahead of time. You can email this information to your counselor before your session so you can spend the maximum amount of time creating your action plan.
