Avoiding a Holiday Hangover

Holiday season 2011 will be a memorable time for retailers.  But will consumers remember it as fondly?

2011 Black Friday was a record-breaking sales day, due in part to some major retailers opening for mega sales earlier than ever!  Also, a record number of consumers are shopping on smart phones and online this year, which requires the use of a credit or debit card or services like PayPal.

In stark contrast, it is estimated that around 16 million Americans are still paying off 2010 holiday expenses on credit cards.  Credit counselors report an increase in calls after the new year from consumers who have overextended themselves during the holidays and are unable to manage all their credit card bills.

To ensure your 2012 holidays don’t come with this baggage, here are a few tips:

  • Consider joining a Christmas club or payroll deducted savings account.
  • Shop through the year to prevent last-minute overspending.
  • Set expectations or limits with family members for next year.
  • Use ClearPoint’s Holiday Planner to create your budget.

If you find yourself overwhelmed and need help figuring out your next steps, take advantage of ClearPoint’s free credit counseling sessions. Call 800.750.2227 (CCCS) or get started now online.
